Alien: Isolation is the latest game in the Alien series and it’s a survival horror experience. It’s based on the movie series, which is a plus, and it focuses on the idea of adding in even more lore and style into the mix. The game is set around 15 years after the first Alien movie. But how does it fare and is it worth a shot?
The idea here is that we follow the daughter of Ellen Ripley, Amanda. This new protagonist is set on connecting the game with the movies and we feel it does a very good job. Amanda is investigating the disappearance of her mother aboard the space station. What’s really cool about the game is that the station is filled with Alien creatures.
What you will notice right off the bat is that the game is bringing in a lot of stealth, but also survival horror elements into a great, very interesting package. Another thing to note is that you will need to outsmart and try to fight aliens with all kinds of unique tools. We have a flamethrower, but also a motion tracker and other things. Even if they might not seem as enough, we will end up trying to use these and finding a way to push the boundaries as much as possible in order to win.
As you play you have all kinds of objectives, ranging from stuff like reaching a new location to acquire specific items. There’s a lot of exploration involved here, and that’s definitely great because it adds in a unique range of ideas and you will have tons of fun exploring all the different options. Since it’s a survival focused game, you can go inside the empty lockers, under the tables and so on, which certainly adds to the gameplay and feel of this title.
There is a main antagonist here, which is an Alien creature and we can’t kill it. What that means is we need to find all kinds of ways to survive. There are stun batons, flamethrowers, revolvers, bolt guns, but the ammo is limited. Because of that, we need to focus on minimizing any major attacks, and we can also craft all kinds of items. Which is cool, because it makes the game truly feel like a survival experience where you have to do everything in your power to survive.
The space station we browse here is very large, there are also areas which you can only access via a key card or an entry code at the latter parts of the game. You can also trigger actions or access info from rewiring stations and computer terminals.
Sounds in Alien: Isolation are important because it’s a survival game, so you need to pay attention to the enemy and where they are at this time. When it comes to visuals, Alien: Isolation looks amazing and the characters and locations are very well made. There’s a lot of focus on even the simplest details, which certainly adds to the experience.
We feel that Alien: Isolation does a very good job at bringing a rewarding and very exciting story with cool elements and powerful features. It’s highly innovative and the fact it has a direct connection to the original is definitely appealing. Plus, even if the game might feel like a slow burn at first, it’s still really nice and well done. The movie connectivity is definitely kicking things up a notch, but overall there’s a lot to be had here and the game itself is super entertaining, albeit quite scary at times too! Play it now!
