The Medium is a great horror experience that presents itself as a mix between Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The idea of bringing in a story focused a lot on supernatural elements is automatically appealing to horror fans, and everyone that plays the game gets to see why right from the start. What you will appreciate quite a bit with The Medium is that it has a very interesting story where the main character is a medium who can go between a real world and spirit world at any given time.
The story itself is cleverly crafted and while we think that the ending is quite satisfying, it’s the journey that really matters. Thanks to the idea of having 2 different worlds here, The Medium does a very good job at bringing in a very engaging and exciting puzzle design. On top of that, you also meet some characters along the way that have their fair share of baggage and an interesting personality.
However, as you play through the game, you will notice that the title becomes increasingly challenging and the story itself has some dark twists. Which is great, because it keeps you engaged and truly focused on the experience as a whole. That’s the thing that really pushes the limits here, and the attention to detail is incredible through and through.
While some people might dislike how dark the game is as a whole both in its story and looks, we think that it actually manages to enhance the story and truly make it more exciting and appealing. That’s the thing that a lot of people will like in The Medium, its interesting style and the fact that it constantly brings in some new elements, characters and ideas that twist things around.
Another thing we like here is the fact that the puzzles are very well done. They are engaging and exciting, but also fun and filled with all kinds of creative ideas. Yes, there are obvious challenges that can arise, but the thing that really matters here is how great the gameplay becomes and how the story continues to impress all the time.
There are also throwbacks and easter eggs related to older horror games like Alone in the Dark. All these things really help push the limits of creativity while bringing in something new and fun all the time. It’s definitely something different that can be an acquired taste, but for horror games The Medium certainly manages to deliver exactly what they want.
We had a blast with The Medium and we think this is a very well designed, innovative and fun game. It has a vast range of clever ideas, the dual world element is innovative and great overall, and the story itself complements the gameplay very well. This is the type of innovation that a lot of horror game players will like, because it feels refreshing, it’s fun, and really engaging too. You do need to give it a try for yourself, especially if you love horror games!
